January 21 CDV meeting topic is Communications. Jim Floyd N6BPM,
City of Burbank Radio Shop Supervisor will be speaking about ICIS and the
city’s digital trunked radio system. Following his presentation will be a
short training session on using the Vertex VX-424 VHF D-Net hand helds
and Motorola MT-2000 D-Net hand helds. BEARS are asked to help train
CDV members on proper radio operation. Following this will be mobile field
drill using the D-Net radios. Members will be sent out into the field to handle
certain tasks using radio communications as a tool.

Plan to participate and assist training your fellow CDV members about
radio communications.

------------------------------------------------

At the January 14 BEARS meeting, many new BEARS members expressed
interest in additional Net Control training and additional Arson Watch
Patrol training. As a result, we will have a concentrated Arson Watch
Patrol training session on Monday, February 9 at 1800 hrs (6pm) at the Fire
Training Center. This will be followed by Net Control training at 1845 hrs
with an official BEARS net being conducted at 1900 hrs.

BEARS members that have already signed up for the February 9 training
are: Manny Rodriguez, Alex McGregor, Bob Wicks, Dave Schaub. All
interested BEARS and CDV members are invited to attend.

------------------------------------------------

During the January 14 BEARS meeting, members reviewed the procedures
needed to program a frequency into their radio. Review your radio’s owner's
manual on the steps to:

1. Select Band and go to VFO mode.
2. Enter frequency into VFO.
3. Enter offset shift if using repeater.
4. Enter subaudible tone (PL) if used.
5. Label channel number or name if desired.
6. Save into memory.

We may get called out and need to reprogram our own radios in the field with
new frequencies, tones, etc. to participate in an event. Being familiar with
our own radio is important for success.

------------------------------------------------

Here is the BEARS calendar for 2009. Plan to attend every month.
Important training will be featured at each meeting. All interested persons
are invited to attend:

Eric K6EJC and Joe Dunn KF6MHL have been working hard on the PSJMC
Providence St. Joseph Medical Center mobile command post vehicle. This
week we successfully completed installation of the VHF/UHF ham radio and
hospital radios and their respective antennas. All radios have been tested
and are working satisfactorily.

The mobile command post consists of 2 Kenwood TM-V71A 2meter/440
mobile radios, Alinco DR-235T 220 mhz radio, Uniden BC-996T digital
scanner plus Vertex VX-4200 VHF and UHF mobiles. The VHF radio is tuned
to D-Net frequency, the UHF radio is programmed with PSJMC and Holy
Cross Hospital radio frequencies, plus American Red Cross.

We still need assistance installing the HF antenna. If you are able to assist,
contact Eric K6EJC at 818 599-6883 or Joe KF6MHL at 818 846-3069.

When the trailer is completed, we plan to have a training session for BEARS
members interested in operating it during a disaster or other activation.
The trailer features 2m/440, 220, HF/6meter, D-Net, plus PSJMC hospital
radios. We will also have our own flatscreen TV and lap top computer.

------------------------------------------------

One of our fellow BEARS members has landed himself up at PSJMC
(Providence St. Joseph Medical Center). Chester Brown K6CRB will be at
PSJMC for several days this week. We wish him successful treatment
and cure.
