((2)) DCS DISTRICT 12 - CRESCENTA VALLEY SHERIFF'S STATION
MESSAGES FOR WEEK OF 8/24/2009:
To: All Members
From: Exec. Staff
The renewal process has been quite an undertaking. As you know the
process is not as simple as it had been in the past. Our ability to print ID’s
and then turn around and issue them in a timely manner is not what it used
to be. Many of the processes handled in house by DCS have been taken
out of our hands. Even though your renewal packets were submitted by the
deadline, there were a few rather large stumbling blocks. Not only was
there a bottleneck outside of DCS, but there were and continue to be issues
with the Livescans. We understand this is very frustrating and are feeling
exactly the same as you. Please note that the Exec. Staff has been trying
to get this process moving along but we are just as frustrated as you.

Please submit your commitment to assist with the Monday night net. Time
on duty at the CVS station is 1845 hours and you will be done by 2000 hours.
This is an excellent time to become familiar with the station and practice
communicating on the net. The time spent counts towards your hours
requirement. New members are encouraged to attend and become familiar
also. Please email Mike Farrell, M-001 at farrell075@aol.com.

We have been asked again this year to support LASD, L.A. County Fire
Department and Glendale Fire in the annual “Play It Safe Program.” It will
be held on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the Verdugo Hills Hospital.
The expo is from 1000 to 1500 hours. DCS will help to host the Crescenta
Valley station’s mobile command post. This will be an excellent opportunity
to discuss DCS and amateur radio to all guests and visitors. We developed
a great working relationship with the various departments and with the
community during the recent Evacuation Drill. I am sure you will agree that
this is an important opportunity for us. Please plan to attend all or part of this
event and help show what DCS is all about. PLEASE SAVE THE DATE:

((3)) LOCAL (BURBANK) BEARS MESSAGES FOR WEEK OF 8/24/2009:
Here are this week's messages:
Upcoming BEARS Net Control Operators:
08/31/09 BEARS Net - Wanda Penner KG6GTA
09/07/09 No Nets - Labor Day Holiday
09/14/09 BEARS Net - Operator Needed
09/21/09 BEARS Net - Operator Needed
09/28/09 BEARS Net - Operator Needed
As an experiment, last week's net was conducted on N6MQS/R
448.540 R 123.0 encode/decode. (BEARS Alternate repeater). We linked it
to the primary BEARS repeater 446.860 R 123.0 for those people who may
not have been advised of the change. The N6MQS repeater is atop Verdugo
Peak and has much larger coverage than the BEARS machine does. As a
result, we plan to utilize both repeaters in the future. Please make sure you
have both frequencies programmed in your radios.
------------------------------------------------
In support of DCS, BEARS members Wanda Penner KG6GTA and Dave
Schoch KI6UCK are helping with the DCS Countywide Net conducted tonight
(8/24/09) at Crescenta Valley Sheriff Station. Part of our agreement with
DCS is to help conduct the DCS nets at Crescenta Valley Station. Contact
Mike Farrell at Farrell075@aol.com to schedule your night.
Everyone needs to be proficient as net controller, it is not difficult, it just
takes practice! Please volunteer for open dates during roll call.
For additional on air net control training, consider monitoring the ARES Net
Monday nights at 9pm on the DARN System. DARN 4 (Verdugo Peak):
445.280 R 100.0 PL. For information about DARN system, go to
www.DARN.org.
Consider taking the ARRL AREC (Amateur Radio Emergency
Communications) Level 1 Course (EC-001). Cost is $50 for ARRL members,
$85 for non members (join ARRL and save!). Class begins September 4 and
ends October 30. Go to www.arrl.org/cce/courses for more information.

The Angeles Crest 100 run is Saturday September 19/Sunday September

Pasadena. Go to www.ac100.com for more information. BEARS Eric
Christensen and David Schoch will be working at the Chilao check point.
