Routine: 09/21/09, 0800 hours
To: All Members
From: Mike Farrell, M-001

I want to thank all members who assisted on the Station Fire. As the
longest activation in the history of DCS, it was pleasure working with the
best of the DCS organization. The deployment was long and we had to
adjust to the heat, smoke, and long hours. It was a true test of our ability
in an emergency situation. There were times when we were idle, but
continued to be a valuable resource to the Sheriff’s Department. 48 different
members put in 1,549 hours of dedicated service to insure that our program
was a success. Again, thank you to all who stepped up and assisted on
the Station Fire.

Fire season is still with us! Starting tonight and running for the next few
days, the County has issued a Red Flag Alert. This means high temp,
low humidity, and winds. Please make sure you keep your eyes open and
be alert to what is going on around our region. Smoke, flames, TV alerts,
radio alerts and the LADCS messages are all things that can let you know
things are going on. Go bags and radios and there batteries should be
refreshed and ready to respond.

9pm. All arson watch trained personnel please be available for potential
call outs. Very warm/hot weather is predicted for this week. Warmest and
windiest days are expected to be Tuesday thru Thursday.

------------------------------------------------

Station Fire update: As of Sunday 09/20, the fire is at 160,557 acres
burned, 93% containment. It is now considered as the 10th largest fire in
California since 1933. For more information and to view the Mt. Wilson
camera, go to www.inciweb.org.

------------------------------------------------

Fire season is here with a vengeance. Please check your GO BAGS and
make sure you are prepared. That includes having your uniform,
identification, and more than a half tank of gas. Also make sure your HT is
fully charged and you have spare batteries and a magnetic mount antenna.
Make sure you also have a working flashlight with spare batteries.

------------------------------------------------

It was great having Acting Burbank Fire Chief Ray Krakowski, plus Battalion
Chief Ron Baron and Capt. Daryl Isozaki at last week's CDV meeting. Erik
Day did a review of CERT activities at the Station Fire.

------------------------------------------------

Burbank CDV is participating in the Safety Fair at Burbank Lowe's Store at
Empire Center on Saturday Sept 26 from approximately 10am to 2 pm.
The red CDV trailer will be on display.

CDV is also participating in the Plaza del Fuego during Fire Prevention
Week along San Fernando Road on Weekends Fri/Sat Oct 2/3, and
Oct 9/10 from 5-9pm. Contact Lynne Whitlock at 818 621-4400 to
volunteer for either event.

------------------------------------------------

Join in the Great Shakeout 2009 on Thursday October 15. The City will
have limited participation.

Ralph Ricketson KG6WXY of CalTrans spoke last Friday night at the San
Fernando Valley Amateur Radio Club about Great Shakeout 2009. He
shared several websites for information on earthquakes and Operation
Shakeout: www.CISN.org California Integrated Seismic Network
www.earthquakecountry.org and www.daretoprepare.org

Expected scenario is for rupture near Salton Sea, shock waves will progress
thru Palm Springs, San Bernardino, Orange, Los Angeles and Ventura
Counties causing major damage. Communications, transportation, utilities
are expected to damaged for some time. For more info go to
www.shakeout.org.

------------------------------------------------

Please make sure you have the N6MQS/R 448.540 R 123.0 encode/decode
(BEARS Alternate repeater) programmed into your radios. The N6MQS
repeater is atop Verdugo Peak and has much larger coverage than the
BEARS machine does. As a result, we plan to utilize both repeaters in the
future. Bill Smith N6MQS is a long standing BEARS member.

------------------------------------------------

Check your CDV membership card; if it is due for renewal, call the City
Live Scan office at 818 238-5340.

------------------------------------------------

Remember to keep hydrated (DRINK WATER!!) on warm days. An
emergency responder is of no use when they become the victim.

------------------------------------------------

Don't forget to join us at BEARS Coffee Social at Starbucks next to Bob's
Big Boy on Riverside Dr. from approximately 5pm to 7pm on Wednesdays.

------------------------------------------------

If you know anyone interested in becoming a ham, there are two upcoming
Technician classes: Lost Hills Sheriff Station on Sunday Sept 27 from
0930-1700 hrs. Contact k6yxh@arrl.net for info.

Independent Radio Club has their two day technician class at Eagle Rock
City Hall on Sat/Sun Oct 10/11 from 0900-1700 hrs. Contact
w6cpa@arrl.net for info.

------------------------------------------------

As we transition to the Fire Corps Program in January and become
"Burbank ACS - Auxiliary Communications Service," we are working on
creating a "BEARS Radio Club." If you are interested in helping with this
goal, please contact Eric K6EJC or David Schoch KI6UCK or Rick
Penner W6RJP.

------------------------------------------------

Remember that everyone needs to be proficient in the use of their own radio.
Re-read the owner's manual. Make a copy and keep it with your go bag.
Become familiar with the procedures needed to enter a new frequency,
repeater offset or simplex, sub audible tone, and storing it in memory.
Everyone should have a magnetic antenna to connect to their HT when in a
vehicle. Someone who cannot program their own radio is of little use in an
emergency situation.

------------------------------------------------

Here is the BEARS calendar for the rest of 2009. Plan to attend every
month. Important training will be featured at each meeting. All interested
persons are invited to attend.
