Thank you for stepping up and contributing the hours you put in during the

Routine: 09/21/09, 0800 hours
To: All Members
From: Mike Farrell, M-001

I want to thank all members who assisted on the Station Fire. As the
longest activation in the history of DCS, it was pleasure working with the
best of the DCS organization. The deployment was long and we had to
adjust to the heat, smoke, and long hours. It was a true test of our ability
in an emergency situation. There were times when we were idle, but
continued to be a valuable resource to the Sheriff’s Department. 48 different
members put in 1,549 hours of dedicated service to insure that our
program was a success. Again, thank you to all who stepped up and
assisted on the Station Fire.

Fire season is still with us! Starting tonight and running for the next few
days, the County has issued a Red Flag Alert. This means high temp,
low humidity, and winds. Please make sure you keep your eyes open and
be alert to what is going on around our region. Smoke, flames, TV alerts,
radio alerts and the LADCS messages are all things that can let you know
things are going on. Go bags and radios and there batteries should be
refreshed and ready to respond.

Routine: 09/21/09, 1030 hours
To: All Members
From: Mike Farrell, M-001

SPECIAL REMINDER: Please make sure that you submit your best guess
on your total hours from the time you joined DCS and 12/31/08. This is a
very important task and must be to me no later than 10/02/09 so I can
submit to DCS. Only a few of the District 12 members have responded to
this request.

If you would like to have any special messages about activities in your city
included in the District 12 messages, please submit them to me by Sunday
evening so I can get them in.

[CVS-6]

------------------------------------------------

Please submit your commitment to assist with the Monday night net. Time
on duty at the CVS station is 1845 hours and you will be done by

and practice communicating on the net. The time spent counts towards
your hours requirement. New members are encouraged to attend and
become familiar also. Please email Mike Farrell, M-001 at
farrell075@aol.com.

((3)) LOCAL (BURBANK) BEARS MESSAGES FOR WEEK OF 9/28/09:

Here are this week's messages:

Upcoming BEARS Net Control Operators:

10/05/09 BEARS Net -- Rick Penner W6RJP
10/12/09 Columbus Day Holiday - No Nets

------------------------------------------------

Congratulations to our newest BEARS member: David Schoch KI6UCK
announces that his better half Sandi Shearer successfully passed the
Technician Exam on Sunday at Lost Hills Sheriff Station ham class.
Sandi, welcome to the BEARS!!

------------------------------------------------

Station Fire update: As of Sunday 09/27, the fire is still listed at 160,557
acres burned, 98% containment. It is now considered as the 10th largest
fire in California since 1933. For more information and to view the Mt.
Wilson camera, go to www.inciweb.org.

------------------------------------------------

Fire season is here with a vengeance. Please check your GO BAGS and
make sure you are prepared. That includes having your uniform,
identification, and more than a half tank of gas. Also make sure your HT is
fully charged and you have spare batteries and a magnetic mount antenna.
Make sure you also have a working flashlight with spare batteries.

------------------------------------------------

Thanks to those that assisted at the Safety Fair at Burbank Lowe's Store
at Empire Center on Saturday Sept 26 and the Plaza del Fuego during Fire
Prevention Week along San Fernando Road.

------------------------------------------------

Join in the Great Shakeout 2009 on Thursday October 15. The City will
have limited participation.

Ralph Ricketson KG6WXY of CalTrans will be the guest speaker for the
October 14 BEARS Meeting. He will be giving an incredible audio visual
presentation on the Shakeout 2009. Expected scenario is for rupture near
Salton Sea, shock waves will progress thru Palm Springs, San Bernardino,
Orange, Los Angeles and Ventura Counties causing major damage.
Communications, transportation, utilities are expected to damaged for some
time. For more info go to www.shakeout.org.

Afterwards, we will discuss the formation of the BEARS Radio Club.

------------------------------------------------

Please make sure you have the N6MQS/R 448.540 R 123.0 encode/decode
(BEARS Alternate repeater) programmed into your radios. The N6MQS
repeater is atop Verdugo Peak and has much larger coverage than the
BEARS machine does. As a result, we plan to utilize both repeaters in the
future. Bill Smith N6MQS (owner of the repeater) is a long standing BEARS
member.

------------------------------------------------

Check your CDV membership card; if it is due for renewal, call the City
Live Scan office at 818 238-5340.

------------------------------------------------

Remember to keep hydrated (DRINK WATER!!) on warm days. An
emergency responder is of no use when they become the victim.

------------------------------------------------

Don't forget to join us at BEARS Coffee Social at Starbucks next to Bob's
Big Boy on Riverside Dr. from approximately 5pm to 7pm on Wednesdays.

------------------------------------------------

Independent Radio Club has their two day technician class at Eagle Rock
City Hall on Sat/Sun Oct 10/11 from 0900-1700 hrs. Contact
w6cpa@arrl.net for info.

------------------------------------------------

As we transition to the Fire Corps Program in January and become
"Burbank ACS - Auxiliary Communications Service," we are working on
creating a "BEARS Radio Club." If you are interested in helping with this
goal, please contact Eric K6EJC or David Schoch KI6UCK or Rick Penner
W6RJP.

------------------------------------------------

Remember that everyone needs to be proficient in the use of their own radio.
Re-read the owner's manual. Make a copy and keep it with your go bag.
Become familiar with the procedures needed to enter a new frequency,
repeater offset or simplex, sub audible tone, and storing it in memory.
Practice these steps. You may need to reprogram your radio on the fly in
an emergency. Everyone should have a magnetic antenna to connect to their
HT when in a vehicle. Someone who cannot program their own radio is of
little use in an emergency situation.

------------------------------------------------

Here is the BEARS calendar for the rest of 2009. Plan to attend every month.
Important training will be featured at each meeting. All interested persons
are invited to attend.
