Thank you for stepping up and contributing the hours you put in during the

Routine: 09/21/09, 0800 hours
To: All Members
From: Mike Farrell, M-001

I want to thank all members who assisted on the Station Fire. As the
longest activation in the history of DCS, it was pleasure working with the
best of the DCS organization. The deployment was long and we had to
adjust to the heat, smoke, and long hours. It was a true test of our ability
in an emergency situation. There were times when we were idle, but
continued to be a valuable resource to the Sheriff’s Department. 48 different
members put in 1,549 hours of dedicated service to insure that our program
was a success. Again, thank you to all who stepped up and assisted on the
Station Fire.

presentation, 7pm on Wednesday November 18 at Fire Training Center.

------------------------------------------------

Good seeing fellow BEARS members at recent ARES meeting at Valley
Presbyterian Hospital. David Schoch, Chester Brown & Eric Christensen
participated in the meeting which covered Shakeout 2009 and other topics.
ARES members were invited to attend Shakeout 2009 presentation at the
BEARS meeting on Wed Oct 14.

Consider checking the ARES LAX website on a regular basis. It is full of
useful resources: www.ares-lax.org

------------------------------------------------

Station Fire update: As of Sunday 10/04, the fire is still listed at 160,557
acres burned, 98% containment. It is now considered as the 10th largest
fire in California since 1933. For more information and to view the Mt.
Wilson camera, go to www.inciweb.org.

There is a new fire in Wrightwood called the Sheep fire. It is approximately
10% contained having burned about 3,500 acres in an area near Lytle Creek
and has required evacuation of approximately 3,400 local residents.

Fire season is here with a vengeance. Please check your GO BAGS
and make sure you are prepared. That includes having your uniform,
identification, and more than a half tank of gas. Also make sure your HT
is fully charged and you have spare batteries and a magnetic mount antenna.
Make sure you also have a working flashlight with spare batteries.

------------------------------------------------

BEARS member Bill Tracy reports that seismic activity is up again in the
Owens Valley near Olancha. Several small earthquakes including a 5.2 scale
earthquake have been reported as of this weekend. For more information
go to: www.earthquake.usgs.gov

------------------------------------------------

Join in the Great Shakeout 2009 on Thursday October 15. The City will have
limited participation. BEARS will be assisting PSJMC Providence Saint
Joseph Medical Center.

Ralph Ricketson KG6WXY of CalTrans will be the guest speaker for the
October 14 BEARS Meeting. He will be giving an incredible audio visual
presentation on the Shakeout 2009. Expected scenario is for rupture near
Salton Sea, shock waves will progress thru Palm Springs, San Bernardino,
Orange, Los Angeles and Ventura Counties causing major damage.
Communications, transportation, utilities are expected to damaged for some
time. For more info go to www.shakeout.org.

------------------------------------------------

Afterwards, we will discuss the formation of the BEARS Radio Club. Rick
Penner W6RJP and David Schoch KI6UCK have spent a lot of work on and
sent out research and information for discussion on forming a radio club
to all BEARS members. Many thanks to both, especially Rick for his
extensive report he sent to all BEARS members to review. Share your
feelings and suggestions at the next BEARS meeting on Wednesday
October 14.

------------------------------------------------

Please make sure you have the N6MQS/R 448.540 R 123.0 encode/decode
(BEARS Alternate repeater) programmed into your radios. The N6MQS
repeater is atop Verdugo Peak and has much larger coverage than the
BEARS machine does. As a result, we plan to utilize both repeaters in
the future. Bill Smith N6MQS (owner of the repeater) is a long standing
BEARS member.

------------------------------------------------

LA County DCS is having a debriefing for those that helped at the Station
Fire at 7pm on Monday, October 5 at County EOB. Business casual attire
is allowed. The Area C Communicators (formerly Tri-City meeting) will be
meeting on Tuesday October 6 at San Fernando Police Department.
All are welcome at both meetings.

------------------------------------------------

Congratulations to Terry Priesant being named M-002, Assistant DCO at
Crescenta Valley Station.

------------------------------------------------

Check your CDV membership card; if it is due for renewal, call the City
Live Scan office at 818 238-5340.

------------------------------------------------

Remember to keep hydrated (DRINK WATER!!) on warm days. An
emergency responder is of no use when they become the victim.

------------------------------------------------

Don't forget to join us at BEARS Coffee Social at Starbucks next to Bob's
Big Boy on Riverside Dr. from approximately 5pm to 7pm on Wednesdays.

------------------------------------------------

If you know anyone interested in getting their Amateur Technician license,
the Independent Radio Club has their two day technician class at Eagle
Rock City Hall THIS WEEKEND on Sat/Sun Oct 10/11 from 0900-1700 hrs.
Contact w6cpa@arrl.net for info.

------------------------------------------------

Remember that everyone needs to be proficient in the use of their own radio.
Re-read the owner's manual. Make a copy and keep it with your go bag.
Become familiar with the procedures needed to enter a new frequency,
repeater offset or simplex, sub audible tone, and storing it in memory.
Practice these steps. You may need to reprogram your radio on the fly in
an emergency. Everyone should have a magnetic antenna to connect to
their HT when in a vehicle. Someone who cannot program their own radio
is of little use in an emergency situation.

------------------------------------------------

Here is the BEARS calendar for the remainder of 2009. Plan to
attend every month. Important training will be featured at each meeting.
All interested persons are invited to attend.
