As a result of the debrief session last week, we have been charged to
develop a program that can be used in the policy manual for any activation.
We will set up the procedure for all DCO’s and all members on what to do
from the initial activation until we are released of duty by the Sheriff’s
Department. All interested members who would like to be on this committee
please contact via email to M-001, farrell075@aol.com. Once we get your
interest level, we will set up the first meeting to outline what we think should
be included. This is an important task and it is the perfect opportunity to
our ideas in place while the Station Fire deployment is still fresh in
our minds.

The Station Fire is almost completely out, but we must stay prepared to be
of assistance in case we are needed. The weather report for this week
indicates that we could receive the first significant amount of rain. It is quite
conceivable that we will be working the same area in case of floods. Your
go-bags should again be on the ready as well as your radio with fully
charged batteries and your back-up battery. IT IS IMPORANT TO MONITOR
YOUR RADIO AND ALSO CHECK YOUR EMAIL OFTER!

LA County DCS semi annual meeting is next Monday October 19 from
1900 to 2100 hrs. at Los Angeles County Sheriff Training Academy
(STARS Center), 11515 Colima Road, Whittier CA 90604.
Talk in on 145.30 R.
------------------------------------------------
Consider checking the ARES LAX website on a regular basis.
It is full of useful resources: www.ares-lax.org
------------------------------------------------
Winter Weather Alert: Rain is expected the next few days in Southern
California. Due to recent fires, major floods in burn areas are expected.
These include La Crescenta - La Canada area. Be prepared to activate
possible Storm Watch Patrols. Have your GO Bag ready, including ID card,
uniform, charged batteries for your HT and a magnetic antenna, plus a
working flashlight and spare batteries.
------------------------------------------------
Join in the Great Shakeout 2009 on Thursday October 15. The City will
have limited participation. BEARS will be assisting PSJMC Providence
Saint Joseph Medical Center. Monitor BEARS repeater during day.
------------------------------------------------
Please make sure you have the N6MQS/R 448.540 R 123.0 encode/decode
(BEARS Alternate repeater) programmed into your radios. The N6MQS
repeater is atop Verdugo Peak and has much larger coverage than the
BEARS machine does. As a result, we plan to utilize both repeaters in the
future. Bill Smith N6MQS (owner of the repeater) is a long standing
BEARS member.
------------------------------------------------
Check your CDV membership card; if it is due for renewal, call the City Live
Scan office at 818 238-5340.
------------------------------------------------
Remember to keep hydrated (DRINK WATER!!) on warm days. An
emergency responder is of no use when they become the victim.
------------------------------------------------
Don't forget to join us at BEARS Coffee Social at Starbucks next to Bob's
Big Boy on Riverside Dr. from approximately 5pm to 7pm on Wednesdays.
------------------------------------------------
Remember that everyone needs to be proficient in the use of their own radio.
Re-read the owner's manual. Make a copy and keep it with your go bag.
Become familiar with the procedures needed to enter a new frequency,
repeater offset or simplex, sub audible tone, and storing it in memory.
Practice these steps. You may need to reprogram your radio on the fly
in an emergency. Everyone should have a magnetic antenna to connect
to their HT when in a vehicle. Someone who cannot program their own radio
is of little use in an emergency situation.
------------------------------------------------
Here is the BEARS calendar for the remainder of 2009. Plan to attend
every month. Important training will be featured at each meeting. All
interested persons are invited to attend.

more information or Google search the course number. Some members
have already completed several of these courses! Send copies of your
FEMA transcript to CDV Training Officer Erik Day at Erikjday@gmail.com.
------------------------------------------------
DCS renewals are in progress. If you are planning to renew your DCS
membership, make sure you have completed FEMA Courses IS100, 200,
700, 800. You also need to have logged atleast 48 hours for 2008. Renewal
forms need to be sent to Crescenta Valley Sheriff Station for Live Scan and
further background check. Persons wishing to remain as DCS members
but not meeting the above requirements will need to retake DCS Basic
Membership classes, etc. prior to becoming a member again.
