From: Debby Miles, Staff 10

On Saturday, October 17, 2009, Frank Myllo, Rick Norwood, Michael
Rogers, and myself traveled to Avalon via the Sheriff's boat Tradition
out of Marina Del Rey. The purpose of this trip was to train several
prospective members. Five people arrived for training willing and eager to
learn about DCS, our organization, and to learn what they can do to assist
in the event of an emergency. Five people were taken through the DCS
training classes including Basic, Message Handling, Net Control, and an
impromptu class on programming their HT's. First, I would like to express
my thanks to the crew of the Tradition for their time and effort in making our
trip fun, informative, and a huge success. Second, I would like to thank
everyone who took the time to make the trip and help with the training.
Third, myself, the trainers, and the Executive Staff would like to thank the
members from Avalon for making such a commitment, spending the time to
go through training, and for making the day such a pleasurable experience.

Welcome to DCS.

MESSAGES FOR WEEK OF 10/26/2009:

Routine: 10/26/09, 1000 hours
To: All Members
From: Mike Farrell, M-001

Thank you to the members who attended the semi-annual meeting on
10/19/09. This was not an easy place to get to due to the distance and
time of night. It was great to meet and hear from Sgt. Hanley on a wide
variety of issues that concern all of us. The topics of discussions were
the status of our renewals; the status of the DCS web page and the
handling out of awards. Please save the date of 03/15/10 for the next
semi-annual meeting.

Ana wind event. Even with the recent rains, fire season is still with us and
we can expect a Red Flag situation. Again, make sure your go-bag is up
to date and your radio and batteries are charged and ready to go.

((3)) LOCAL (BURBANK) BEARS MESSAGES FOR WEEK OF 10/26/09:

Here are this week's messages:

Upcoming BEARS Net Control Operators:

11/02/09 Alex McGregor K9AKM
11/09/09 BEARS Net - Operator Needed
11/16/09 BEARS Net - Operator Needed
11/23/09 Rick Penner W6RJP
11/30/09 Wanda Penner KG6GTA

------------------------------------------------

Daylight savings time ends Saturday night, October 31 (Halloween night)
/Sunday morning November 1. Remember to set your clocks.

------------------------------------------------

Be prepared for possible Arson Watch patrols due to increasing winds this
week. Only certified Arson Watch personnel may drive the City owned white
pickup truck. Keep your Go-Bags ready and HT's charged.

------------------------------------------------

Mark your calendar: CDV-BEARS year end holiday party and awards
presentation, 7pm on Wednesday November 18 at Fire Training Center.

------------------------------------------------

Consider checking the ARES LAX website on a regular basis. It is full of
useful resources: www.ares-lax.org

------------------------------------------------

Please make sure you have the N6MQS/R 448.540 R 123.0 encode/decode
(BEARS Alternate repeater) programmed into your radios. The N6MQS
repeater is atop Verdugo Peak and has much larger coverage than the
BEARS machine does. As a result, we plan to utilize both repeaters in the
future. Bill Smith N6MQS (owner of the repeater) is a long standing
BEARS member.

------------------------------------------------

Check your CDV membership card; if it is due for renewal, call the City
Live Scan office at 818 238-5340.

------------------------------------------------

Remember to keep hydrated (DRINK WATER!!) on warm days. An
emergency responder is of no use when they become the victim.

------------------------------------------------

During the off season, consider upgrading your ham license. Many classes
and exams are available. Consider taking the ARRL AREC (Amateur Radio
Emergency Communications) Level 1 course. Cost is $85 for non-ARRL
members, $50 for ARRL members. (Join ARRL and save! Pays for ARRL
membership and QST subscription.) Check www.ARRL.org for class
& exam information.

------------------------------------------------

Consider attending the next ARES LAX District meeting at Valley
Presbyterian Hospital, 15107 Vanowen St (just east of Sepulveda).
Saturday November 7, at 8 AM. Meeting is in education center, to right of
main building. Hospital validates parking!

------------------------------------------------

Don't forget to join us at BEARS Coffee Social at Starbucks next to Bob's
Big Boy on Riverside Dr. from approximately 5pm to 7pm on Wednesdays.

------------------------------------------------

Remember that everyone needs to be proficient in the use of their own radio.
Re-read the owner's manual. Make a copy and keep it with your go bag.
Become familiar with the procedures needed to enter a new frequency,
repeater offset or simplex, sub audible tone, and storing it in memory.
Practice these steps. You may need to reprogram your radio on the fly in
an emergency. Everyone should have a magnetic antenna to connect to their
HT when in a vehicle. Someone who cannot program their own radio is of
little use in an emergency situation.

------------------------------------------------

CDV Steering Committee has come up with a list of FEMA IS courses
that they recommend for additional training and for the pending new
‘Intermediate’ and ‘Advanced’ CDV membership levels.

Intermediate Level
IS-55 Household Hazardous Materials
IS-292 Disaster Basics
IS-317 Introduction to CERT

Advanced Level
IS-240 Leadership & Influence
IS-241 Decision Making & Problem Solving
IS-242 Effective Communications

Other classes and topics are being considered and added to the course
list. Consider taking some of these online courses. Go to
www.fema.gov for more information or Google search the course number.
Some members have already completed several of these courses!
Send copies of your FEMA transcript to CDV Training Officer Erik Day at
Erikjday@gmail.com.

------------------------------------------------

DCS renewals are in progress. If you are planning to renew your DCS
membership, make sure you have completed FEMA Courses IS100,
200, 700, 800. You also need to have logged atleast 48 hours for 2008.
Renewal forms need to be sent to Crescenta Valley Sheriff Station for Live
Scan and further background check. Persons wishing to remain as DCS
members but not meeting the above requirements will need to retake DCS
Basic Membership classes, etc. prior to becoming a member again.
