Thank you again to Duane Mariotti for his awesome presentation on the
subject of Hospital Disaster Communications at last week's BEARS meeting.
Afterwards, there was final discussion on the creation of a "Bears Radio Club."
Jason Sogolow W6IEE volunteered to be the leader of the new Bears
Radio Club. He also created a Yahoo users group for BEARS/Bears
members: Burbank_amateur_radio. Join in!
----------------------------------------------
Marty Woll N6VI (Virully Infected as he is calling himself now!) had offered
to visit the BEARS again and teach us about NVIS (Near Vertical Incident
Skywave) antennas. NVIS allows you to communicate short range
communications on HF frequencies when repeaters may be off the air
during disasters or other emergencies. Marty has agreed to speak when
he is healthy again. Look forward to seeing Marty at a Fire Corps ACS
meeting in 2010.
------------------------------------------------
Mark your calendar: CDV-BEARS year end holiday party and awards
presentation, THIS WEDNESDAY, 7pm on Wednesday November 18 at
Fire Training Center.
------------------------------------------------
DCS members are needed to assist with traffic control at Crescenta Valley
Run for the Hungry on Thanksgiving Day in La Canada. Contact Mike
Farrell KF6FYS M-001 for more information: farrell075@aol.com
------------------------------------------------
DCS East LA is asking for help for their Christmas parade on Sunday
November 22.
------------------------------------------------
Consider checking the ARES LAX website on a regular basis. It is full of
useful resources: www.ares-lax.org. Next meeting: Saturday December 5
@ 8AM at Valley Presbyterian Hospital.
------------------------------------------------
Glendale GEARS is looking for more volunteers to assist with the Montrose
Christmas Parade held Saturday December 5. Contact Jim Oliff KE6URZ
at ke6urz@arrl.net for more information.
------------------------------------------------
Please make sure you have the N6MQS/R 448.540 R 123.0 encode/decode
(BEARS Alternate repeater) programmed into your radios. The N6MQS
repeater is atop Verdugo Peak and has much larger coverage than the
BEARS machine does. As a result, we plan to utilize both repeaters in the
future. Bill Smith N6MQS (owner of the repeater) is a long standing BEARS
member.
------------------------------------------------
Remember, if you come up on frequency and find the repeater is off, switch
to the repeater output. In other words, turn off the minus shift. It is better
to be prepared by programming simplex on the output frequency in the
adjacent memory channel. Do this for both BEARS 446.860 R and
N6MQS 448.540 R repeaters.
------------------------------------------------
Check your CDV membership card; if it is due for renewal, call the City
Live Scan office at 818 238-5340.
------------------------------------------------
During the off season, consider upgrading your ham license. Many classes
and exams are available. Consider taking the ARRL AREC (Amateur
Radio Emergency Communications) Level 1 course. Cost is $85 for non
ARRL members, $50 for ARRL members (join ARRL and save! (pays for
ARRL membership and QST subscription). Check www.ARRL.org for
class & exam information.
------------------------------------------------
Don't forget to join us at BEARS Coffee Social at Starbucks next to Bob's
Big Boy on Riverside Dr. from approximately 5pm to 7pm on Wednesdays
and occasional Mondays. Check in on the 446.860 R repeater.
------------------------------------------------
Remember that everyone needs to be proficient in the use of their own radio.
Re-read the owner's manual. Make a copy and keep it with your go bag.
Become familiar with the procedures needed to enter a new frequency,
repeater offset or simplex, sub-audible tone, and storing it in memory.
Practice these steps. You may need to reprogram your radio on the fly in
an emergency. Everyone should have a magnetic antenna to connect to
their HT when in a vehicle. Someone who cannot program their own radio
is of little use in an emergency situation.
------------------------------------------------
CDV Steering Committee has come up with a list of FEMA IS courses that
they recommend for additional training and for the pending new
‘Intermediate’ and ‘Advanced’ CDV membership levels.
Intermediate Level
IS-55 Household Hazardous Materials
IS-292 Disaster Basics
IS-317 Introduction to CERT
Advanced Level
IS-240 Leadership & Influence
IS-241 Decision Making & Problem Solving
IS-242 Effective Communications
Other classes and topics are being considered and added to the course list.
Consider taking some of these online courses. Go to www.fema.gov for
more information or Google search the course number. Some members
have already completed several of these courses! Send copies of your
FEMA transcript to CDV Training Officer Erik Day at Erikjday@gmail.com.
------------------------------------------------
DCS renewals are in progress. If you are planning to renew your DCS
membership, make sure you have completed FEMA Courses IS100, 200,
700, 800. You also need to have logged atleast 48 hours for 2008. Renewal
forms need to be sent to Crescenta Valley Sheriff Station for Live Scan
and further background check. Persons wishing to remain as DCS members
but not meeting the above requirements will need to retake DCS Basic
Membership classes, etc. prior to becoming a member again.
------------------------------------------------
That's it for this week's messages.
