12/21/09 BEARS Net - Eric Christensen K6EJC FINAL BEARS NET

Every Christmas season, Knott's Berry Farm provides free admission to
police and fire from Thanksgiving thru this Sunday, December 20. In honor
of the LA County DCS and Burbank BEARS/CDV members that worked in
support of the Station Fire, Knott's has offered FREE admission to DCS
and BEARS/CDV members! Your CDV or DCS ID will get you in free,
all you pay is parking.
------------------------------------------------
Consider checking the ARES LAX website on a regular basis. It is full of
useful resources: www.arrllax.org. (Notice address change). Check into
the ARES net tonight at 9pm on DARN system: 445.28 R 100.0 PL
(Verdugo Peak). (Store this frequency in your radio). Net protocol is that
you also check out of net at end of net.
Consider attending ARES meetings which are the first Saturday of every
month at 8AM at Valley Presbyterian Hospital on Vanowen in Van Nuys.
Next meeting will be Saturday January 2, 2010.
At the recent ARES meeting, Curt Kaplan of National Weather Service
Oxnard gave their Weather Spotter training class. ARES has been chosen
to be the NWS Weather Spotter contact for Los Angeles County. You can
take their spotter training course online at:
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/spotter/course/course.php
------------------------------------------------
Please make sure you have the N6MQS/R 448.540 R 123.0 encode/decode
(BEARS Alternate repeater) programmed into your radios. The N6MQS
repeater is atop Verdugo Peak and has much larger coverage than the
BEARS machine does. As a result, we plan to utilize both repeaters
in the future. Bill Smith N6MQS (owner of the repeater) is a long standing
BEARS member.
Remember, if you come up on frequency and find the repeater is off, switch
to the repeater output. In other words, turn off the minus shift. It is better
to be prepared by programming simplex on the output frequency in the
adjacent memory channel. Do this for both BEARS 446.860 R and
N6MQS 448.540 R repeaters.
------------------------------------------------
New FireCorps ID cards will be issued at the January 20, 2010 FireCorps
Meeting. NOTE: This meeting will be held at Burbank Fire Station 11
(Headquarters Building) at 6PM (Note time difference). You must surrender
CDV badge to obtain FireCorps badge. First FireCorps ACS
(formerly BEARS) meeting is Wednesday January 13, 2010 at
Fire Training Center.
------------------------------------------------
All current CDV/Firecorps members will be issued a new Firecorps polo
and T-shirt FREE when they become available. Your CDV shirts are current
uniform items until Firecorps uniform items become available. We will be
showing off new uniform items at January 2010 Firecorps and ACS meetings.
(New Firecorps polo shirts look great!) Gall's will be the new uniform vendor.
------------------------------------------------
During the off season, consider upgrading your ham license. Many classes
and exams are available. Consider taking the ARRL AREC (Amateur
Radio Emergency Communications) Level 1 course. Cost is $85 for
non-ARRL members, $50 for ARRL members (join ARRL and save! (pays
for ARRL membership and QST subscription). Check www.ARRL.org for
class & exam information. Also consider taking some of the FEMA ICS
courses offered, go to www.fema.gov.
------------------------------------------------
Consider upgrading or restocking your Go Bag. Replace expired
perishable products. Check your HT, flashlights and spare batteries.
Charge or replace as needed.
------------------------------------------------
Don't forget to join us at BEARS Coffee Social at Starbucks next to Bob's
Big Boy on Riverside Dr. from approximately 5pm to 7pm on Wednesdays
and occasional Mondays. Check in on the 446.860 R repeater.
------------------------------------------------
Remember that everyone needs to be proficient in the use of their own radio.
Re-read the owner's manual. Make a copy and keep it with your go bag.
Become familiar with the procedures needed to enter a new frequency,
repeater offset or simplex, sub audible tone, and storing it in memory.
Practice these steps. You may need to reprogram your radio on the fly in
an emergency. Everyone should have a magnetic antenna to connect to
their HT when in a vehicle. Someone who cannot program their own radio
is of little use in an emergency situation.
------------------------------------------------
Enjoy the holiday season: We have a full moon and blue moon this
December (blue moon = 2nd full moon in one month-December 31!!).
------------------------------------------------
CDV Steering Committee has come up with a list of FEMA IS courses that
they recommend for additional training and for the pending new ‘Intermediate’
and ‘Advanced’ CDV membership levels.
Intermediate Level
IS-55 Household Hazardous Materials
IS-292 Disaster Basics
IS-317 Introduction to CERT
Advanced Level
IS-240 Leadership & Influence
IS-241 Decision Making & Problem Solving
IS-242 Effective Communications
Other classes and topics are being considered and added to the course list.
Consider taking some of these online courses. Go to www.fema.gov for
more information or Google search the course number. Some members
have already completed several of these courses! Send copies of your
FEMA transcript to CDV Training Officer Erik Day at Erikjday@gmail.com.
------------------------------------------------
DCS renewals are in progress. If you are planning to renew your DCS
membership, make sure you have completed FEMA Courses IS100,
200, 700, 800. You also need to have logged atleast 48 hours for 2008.
Renewal forms need to be sent to Crescenta Valley Sheriff Station for Live
Scan and further background check. Persons wishing to remain as DCS
members but not meeting the above requirements will need to retake
DCS Basic Membership classes, etc. prior to becoming a member again.

That's it for this week's messages.
