Routine: 01/04/10, 0920 hours
To: All members
From: Mike Farrell, M-001
As we begin 2010, I am requesting that all District 12 members take a turn
assisting on the Monday night nets. This is important as we need to have
everyone familiar with our radio room and feel comfortable in working at
the station in times of emergencies. While the threat of brush fires has
been reduced in our area, floods, winds, and earthquakes are still going to
be a way of life for us. The time required is that you are to be at the station
by 1845 hours and you will be done promptly at 2000 hours. A district officer
will always be available to assist you.

01/25/10 FireCorps ACS Net -- Wanda KG6GTA
02/01/10 FireCorps ACS Net -- Rick W6RJP
02/08/10 FireCorps ACS Net - Operator needed
------------------------------------------------
Our First Fire Corps ACS (formerly BEARS) meeting is Wednesday
January 13, 2010 at Fire Training Center.
New FireCorps ID cards will be issued at the January 20, 2010 Fire Corps
Meeting. NOTE: This meeting will be held at Burbank Fire Station 11
(Headquarters Building) at 6PM (Note time difference). You must surrender
CDV badge to obtain FireCorps badge.
------------------------------------------------
Our own Eric Christensen has been named ARES District Emergency
Coordinator for the Northwest District of Los Angeles County. Consider
attending ARES meetings which are the first Saturday of every month at
8AM at Valley Presbyterian Hospital on Vanowen in Van Nuys. The next
meeting will be Saturday February 6, 2010 and the guest speaker will be
from US Geological Survey.
ARES LAX website is a great resource and we should consider checking
it on a regular basis. It is full of useful resources: www.ares-lax.org.
Consider checking into the ARES net tonight at 9pm on the DARN
system: 445.28 R 100.0 PL (Verdugo Peak).
------------------------------------------------
Please make sure you have the N6MQS/R 448.540 R 123.0 encode/decode
(Burbank Fire Corps ACS Alternate repeater) programmed into your radios.
The N6MQS repeater is atop Verdugo Peak and has much larger coverage
than the Burbank Fire Corps ACS machine does. As a result, we plan
to utilize both repeaters in the future. Bill Smith N6MQS (owner of the
repeater) is a long standing BEARS member.
If you come up on frequency and find the repeater is off, what should you
do to communicate? The answer: switch to the repeater output. In other
words, turn off the minus shift. It is better to prepare by programming
simplex on the output frequency in the adjacent memory channel. Do this
for both Burbank Fire Corps ACS 446.860 R and N6MQS 448.540 R repeaters.
------------------------------------------------
.
Consider upgrading or restocking your Go Bag. Replace expired perishable
products. Check your HT and spare batteries. Charge or replace as needed.
Don't forget to join us at BEARS Coffee Social at Starbucks next to Bob's
Big Boy on Riverside Dr. from approximately 5pm to 7pm on Wednesdays
and occasional Mondays. Check in on the 446.860 repeater.
------------------------------------------------
Remember that everyone needs to be proficient in the use of their own radio.
Re-read the owner's manual. Make a copy and keep it with your go bag.
Become familiar with the procedures needed to enter a new frequency,
repeater offset or simplex, sub audible tone, and storing it in memory.
Practice these steps. You may need to reprogram your radio on the fly in
an emergency. Everyone should have a magnetic antenna to connect to
their HT when in a vehicle. Someone who cannot program their own radio is
of little use in an emergency situation.
------------------------------------------------
That's it for this week's messages.
