As was said in the final BEARS messages: The Burbank BEARS has
years of heritage as an awesome organization, considered as one
of the best. As such, you are part of the best. In January, we changed
our name to Fire Corps ACS, but we are still the same people. We will
continue to be the best. Let us continue this heritage as we move
forward into 2010.

------------------------------------------------

Thank you to all who came to the January ACS meeting. We are moving
forward as Fire Corps ACS now and have several good meetings lined up.
Marty Woll N6VI will be our guest speaker at our February 10 Fire Corps
ACS meeting, and the topic will be about NVIS (Near Vertical Incident
Skywave) antennas.

------------------------------------------------

Last Wednesday was to be the initial Fire Corps new ID exchange night.
Unfortunately, the City had some computer problems and were not able
to process new ID's as planned. Those members that did attend were
issued Fire Corps program information and updated information sheet.

There are several levels of membership in the new Fire Corps program.
Everyone that joins is basically a BFCP (Burbank Fire Corps Program)
Volunteer Basic member. BFCP Volunteer 1 members have also
completed ACS Basic class (orientation to radio usage), FEMA IS-100
(Intro to ICS), FEMA IS-200a (ICS for Single resources) and FEMA IS-700
(Intro to NIMS). Most BEARS/Fire Corps ACS members (and those that
were members of DCS) have already passed these courses.

The next level (BFCP Volunteer 2) requires additonal FEMA courses:
IS-07 (Citizens Guide to Disaster Assistance), plus IS-22 (Are you ready?),
IS-55 (Household Hazardous Materials), IC-317 (Intro to CERT), and IS-394a
(protecting home/small business from disaster). Consider going to the
www.FEMA.gov website and take these free online courses.

------------------------------------------------

Chester Brown K6CRB will be our new liaison between Burbank
Fire Corps ACS and the MARS (Military Auxiliary Radio Service). He is also
liaison between ARES & MARS.

------------------------------------------------

The Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay Race from Baker to Las Vegas
comes up on Saturday April 17 and Sunday April 18. Last year, several
of our members supported 2 Los Angeles County Sheriff teams (Community
Colleges and Marina Del Rey station). Some other members supported
ARES by working at one of the stages along the race course. We have been
asked to support those teams again this year. If you are interested in
participating in this awesome event, contact Eric K6EJC for more information.

------------------------------------------------

It was great seeing several members at the January ARES meeting at
Valley Presbyterian Hospital. Joy Matlack spoke about Baker to Vegas run.
The February 6 meeting topic will be Erik Pounders from USGS
(Geological Survey) and the March 6 meeting will be Duane Mariotti of Kaiser
Permanente talking about hospital disaster communications. Check the
ARES website at www.areslax.org. ARES meetings are at 8AM at Valley
Presbyterian Hospital Education Center (to the right of main building).

------------------------------------------------

Don't forget to join us for coffee social at Starbucks next to Bob's Big Boy
on Riverside Drive on Wednesdays and occasional Mondays. Check in on
446.860 R 123.0 repeater.

------------------------------------------------

The Independent Radio Club (WA6IRC) meeting is 7pm this Friday,
January 29 at LampLighter Restaurant on Van Nuys Blvd @ Magnolia.
Talk in on 445.340 R 103.5 PL.

------------------------------------------------

That's it for this week's messages.
