Thank you to everyone that volunteered or was on stand by to assist
Crescenta Valley DCS re the heavy rains and flooding they have had.
More rain is expected this week. Burbank Fire Corps Storm Watch Patrol
members should remain available and ready to activate if the need arrises.
Keep your radios and go bags ready.
------------------------------------------------
Marty Woll N6VI will be our guest speaker at our February 10 Fire Corps
ACS meeting, and the topic will be about NVIS (Near Vertical Incident
Skywave) antennas. This allows using HF frequencies for local
communications in case VHF & UHF systems are not available or
operating. Plan to join us!
At next week's general Fire Corps meeting, the topic is communications.
ACS is responsible for training general Fire Corps members on proper radio
communications procedures. Join us at the Fire Corps meeting on
Wednesday February 17.
------------------------------------------------
Firecorps new ID exchange has been delayed due to problems with City
computer system. Your existing CDV/BEARS ID is still valid. You will be
notified when new IDs are available. New Fire Corps polo shirts will also
be issued when available.
------------------------------------------------
There are several levels of membership in the new Fire Corps program.
Everyone that joins is basically a BFCP (Burbank Fire Corps Program)
Volunteer Basic member. BFCP Volunteer 1 members have also completed
ACS Basic class (orientation to radio usage), FEMA IS-100 (Intro to ICS),
FEMA IS-200.a (ICS for Single resources) and FEMA IS-700 (Intro to NIMS).
Most BEARS/Fire Corps ACS members (and those that were members of
DCS) have already passed these courses.
The next level (BFCP Volunteer 2) requires additonal FEMA courses: IS-07
(Citizens Guide to Disaster Assistance), plus IS-22 (Are you ready?), IS-55
(Household Hazardous Materials), IC-317 (Intro to CERT), and IS-394a
(protecting home/small business from disaster.) Consider going to the
www.FEMA.gov website and take these free online courses.
------------------------------------------------
Chester Brown K6CRB will be our new liaison between Burbank Fire Corps
ACS and the MARS (Military Auxiliary Radio Service). He is also liaison
between ARES & MARS.
------------------------------------------------
Everyone should monitor the Fire Corps ACS 446.860 R 123 PL repeater
on a daily basis. Make sure this frequency along with the N6MQS
448.540 R 123.0 repeater and talkaround (on the repeater output) is
programmed into your radios.
------------------------------------------------
This past Saturday, February 6 Erik Pounders W6ZKA from USGS
(Geological Survey) gave an awesome presentation on geology and
earthquakes at the ARES meeting. Duane Mariotti of Kaiser Permanente
will be talking about hospital disaster communications at the March 6
meeting. Check the ARES website at www.areslax.org. ARES meetings
are at 8AM at Valley Presbyterian Hospital Education Center
(to the right of main building).
------------------------------------------------
Don't forget to join us for coffee social at Starbucks next to Bob's Big
Boy on Riverside Drive on Wednesdays and occasional Mondays. Check
in on 446.860 R 123.0 repeater.
------------------------------------------------
The LA County DCS Mt. Disappointment repeater 145.30 R 100 PL is
temporarily out of service. Until it is repaired, they are using the EOB
repeater in East Los Angeles. For DCS messages, go to:
http://dcscopythat.wordpress.com.
------------------------------------------------
Crescenta Valley Sheriff station may need DCS volunteers this week to
assist with possible heavy rains. Contact Mike Farrell at

Thank you to those who replied this past weekend with your availability
for any call outs from LASD during the floods. It is very important that you
reply when requested for your availability even if you cannot be available.
This give us a picture of our manpower should we need to give it to the
Sheriff. We do not need to waste time in trying to call everybody for a
call out. Everyone should be checking their email for messages from the
District and the County.
