Frequently Asked Steering Committee Questions

  • Q: When does the Steering Committee meet?
  • A: The fourth Wednesday of every month at 6:30pm, except for November and December, which have variable times based on SC member availability.
  • Q: Where does the Steering Committee meet?
  • A: The SC meets in the First Floor Conference Room, Burbank Fire Station 11.
  • Q: Aren't you required to post minutes?
  • A: No. Technically, the Burbank Fire Corps SC are volunteer representatives of the Burbank Fire Department, but they function as an advisory committee, not an executive committee. As such, the SC reviews items and makes recommendations to the Burbank Fire Department Disaster Services Coordinator, who ultimately holds all decision-making authority. Therefore, the Brown Act does not apply. However, the SC is as transparent as possible given it's public safety position. If you have any questions regarding the guidance of the program or SC activities, feel free to email the Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Q: How is one selected for the Steering Committee?
  • A: First, a position has to open. Once a position has opened, the current Steering Committee will make a recommendation to the Disaster Services Coordinator based on performance, attendance and attitude. It helps to reach either Volunteer Specialist (VS) or Senior Volunteer (SV) training status as well. The final decision, though, ultimately rests with the Disaster Services Coordinator.
  • Q: Are there any special training requirements for the SC?
  • A: Yes. They vary depending on position and are required to be completed within six months of appointment to the Steering Committee.
  • Q: Would I be stepping on any toes if I took this training without actually being a part of the Steering Committee?
  • A: Not at all. In fact, we encourage volunteers to train as deeply as they have time and patience for. The very nature of disasters means that some of the day-to-day operational leadership may be incapacitated or otherwise unavailable during a disaster (some volunteers are professional emergency managers or responders in other jurisdictions). In that case, it's absolutely essential that we have strong backups, ready to step in.
